What is User Focused Data Architecture?
ERA effectively invented the principle of user-focused data architecture: the idea that the first purpose of data structures is to reflect the user’s situation. This meant that the user was the authority on how the data should be arranged, not some back-office data analyst.|
Drawing on the user’s expertise for designing systems has always been the goal of sound analysis – in principle. The difficulty has been getting the user to clearly and completely describe that expertise, and giving the designer the tools to capture that description in a concise form that can be easily understood yet still serve as a solid foundation for a system design.
ERA solved this problem by marrying basic linguistic principles to the relational theory outlined by Dr. E.F. Codd and C.J. Date. By taking the building blocks of natural language – nouns, verbs, and modifiers – and mapping them to the essential components of relational tables, ERA was able to turn the results of a guided conversation with a user into a tight, well-defined relational structure.
One beauty of Extended Relational Analysis is its platform and product independence. Regardless of type of business, implementation platform, database management system, or programming environment, ERA enables the user and developer to communicate clearly about the data requirements and to document them in a concise, understandable manner that simplifies database implementation – which simplifies every other step in the development effort.
Since 1989, JCK has been devoted to teaching and implementing the principles of User-Focused Data Architecture. UFDA is based on the principle that the users are the data experts in any organization. Sound data architecture should focus on extracting the user's knowledge, clarifying ambiguous defintions, and building understandable data structures. These definitions and structures serve as the basis for system development. The first and most well known UFDA technique is Extended Relational Analysis ™ (ERA), which has been proven for decades. More recent techniques include Business Event Analysis & Modeling ™ (BEAM), which is useful for both Transactional Systems (BEAM TSS) and Decision Support Systems (BEAM DSS).
